A Brief History of the Indian River Literary Society

The Indian River Literary Society dates to early 1997, when Northern Trust’s Vero
Beach office decided to form the Society as a 501(C)(3) organization to promote
reading, writing, and literary discussion. The idea was to choose 6 books, newly
published or soon-to-be published, and to bring in the author to discuss his/her book at
6 different luncheon meetings. At the Literary Society’s inception, Northern Trust
partnered with the Vero Beach Press Journal as co-sponsors.  The first meeting was
held at Orchid Island’s Beach Club in October 1997.
When the Press Journal stepped aside, Northern Trust continued as the sole sponsor
until the fall of 2013.  At that time, the Vero Beach Book Center came on board as a
new co-sponsor. The organization ran smoothly under that tutelage until the pandemic
hit in 2020, causing both book selections and meetings to be suspended for more than
a season. Early in 2022, Northern Trust informed the IRLS that, after 25 years, it would
no longer be a sponsor, and while it would help in the transition, the responsibility of
continuing success would lie in the hands of the IRLS Board.

Under the leadership of
President Ricki Michals and the generous continuing support of Chad Leonard and his
Vero Beach Book Center, the Board determined that Indian River Literary Society would
persevere. Meetings resumed November 2022 at Bent Pine Golf Club. Despite a new
venue and many changes and challenges, the season was a success. And we can
proudly say that Indian River Literary Society, self-supported by membership
subscriptions and donations, is thriving. Our roster of 220 members can now look
forward to many more years of interesting book selections, inspiring speakers, and of
course, delicious lunches.
